I. About the Competition

The CAE Skylark Music Award is organized by the Organizing Committee of the CAE International Cultural Exchange Arts Festival, with professional guidance from institutions directly under China's Ministry of Education, from conservatories and music departments across the country, and from national first-class associations, and with support from official media including the "Xuexi Qiangguo" platform of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee. The first edition was held in Beijing in February 2026, the first national or international accordion competition staged in Beijing since 2018.

The second edition continues the two-stage format of "Online Qualifying Round + On-site Grand Final", with the Grand Final moving to Guangzhou. It runs in coordination with the China Region of the CMA World Accordion Championship and brings together distinguished judges invited from the CMA championship. This edition adds a Digital Accordion Division (电子手风琴组) and, for the first time, the "Yang Wentao Cup" Collaborative Arts Division (「杨文涛杯」协作艺术组), in which accordion classics and Chinese works by Yang Wentao (杨文涛) and other senior figures of the instrument are performed as solos, ensembles, accompaniments and massed ensembles.

III. About the Whitelist Certificate

• Whitelist = the "List of National Competitions for Primary and Secondary School Students" published on the official website of China's Ministry of Education
• Basis of issuance: in line with the Ministry of Education's requirements for national competitions for primary and secondary school students, the certificate is available only to eligible primary and secondary school students; its scope (e.g. solo groups only) and form (e.g. an Outstanding Organization Award) are determined by the Organizing Committee
• Certificate issuance (2026–2027): the schedule follows that of the partner competition actually listed on the 2026 Whitelist
• Selection rule: awarded to a set proportion of Grand Final competitors only. The Online Qualifying Round does not award these certificates, but it must be passed. The Orchestra Division (乐团组) is not eligible
• Path to the certificate: Online Qualifying Round → advance to the On-site Grand Final → place within the award quota → Whitelist certificate (nationally numbered, verifiable on the official website)
• Certificates: the online round awards Qualifying Round certificates; the on-site round awards Grand Final honour certificates plus the Whitelist certificate (within the quota). Every certificate carries personalized written comments from the judges

IV. Groups and Repertoire Requirements

The Accordion Division comprises the Open Division (公开组), Professional Division (专业组), Orchestra Division (乐团组) and "Yang Wentao Cup" Collaborative Arts Division (「杨文涛杯」协作艺术组).

• Students of conservatory-affiliated secondary schools may not enter the Open Division; please take care when selecting a group at registration
• Advancement: the two rounds are scored independently of each other — a score of 20 points (on the 25-point scale) in the Online Qualifying Round qualifies a competitor for the On-site Grand Final. The Grand Final is scored afresh and ranked on its own; Qualifying Round scores are not carried forward. The Organizing Committee reserves the right of final interpretation
• Age calculation: ages are reckoned as of 1 January 2027, i.e. age = 2027 − year of birth. A competitor born in 2012 therefore counts as 15, even if their birthday has not yet fallen within 2027

Pre-school Group

This group does not distinguish between Standard Bass and Free Bass; all entries are judged together. Small instruments such as 8-bass accordions are equally welcome.

Digital Accordion Groups (new this edition)

Definition: electronic or digital accordions (such as the Roland FR-series V-Accordion) and bellows instruments with MIDI output. The instrument's built-in voices, rhythms and accompaniment functions may be used; an external backing track is permitted, but the competitor's own part must be played live and may not be pre-recorded. Competitors bring their own instrument to the on-site Grand Final; the Organizing Committee provides DI boxes and amplification. A digital accordion may still be used as an instrument in the Chamber Music, World Music and Orchestra groups. Digital accordion solo entries may not be made in the Standard Bass or Free Bass groups.

World Music Group

This group is intended to present a complete musical concept. Repertoire is free, with no restriction of style or region, and cross-genre arrangements and original works are encouraged. The line-up must include at least one bellows instrument: acoustic, digital or electronic accordion, Diatonic or Chromatic, and bellows instruments such as the Bandoneon qualify equally.

4. "Yang Wentao Cup" Collaborative Arts Division (「杨文涛杯」协作艺术组)

The repertoire follows Professor Yang Wentao's document "Group Structure and Set Pieces for the 'Yang Wentao Cup' Collaborative Arts Division of the CAE Competition" (《CAE大赛"杨文涛杯"协作艺术组别设置及规定曲目》). Every entry consists of two pieces. All groups run over the two rounds, Online Qualifying Round and On-site Grand Final. The solo groups (groups 8–13) run alongside the solo groups of the Open and Professional Divisions, and a competitor may enter both. The durations given for the solo groups apply to the free-choice piece only; the set piece is not timed.

VI. Video Recording Requirements

• Resolution 720P (1280×720, 16:9), format .mp4 / .mpg
• Fixed camera position, landscape orientation, camera about 3 metres from the performer
• The competitor must be shown full-length: head, feet and the instrument with the bellows fully extended. Background natural and uncluttered. No spoken announcement is required
• Audio level −18 to 0 dB; a small amount of natural or digital reverberation is permitted, but do not overdo it
• The complete programme must be recorded continuously in a single video file with no break between pieces. No audio or video editing of any kind is permitted; violation results in disqualification
• Digital Accordion groups: audio may be taken from the instrument's line output, but the picture must show the whole performance in sync
• Yang Wentao Cup accompaniment groups: singers and accompanists must be recorded together, in the same frame and at the same time
• The CAE Organizing Committee reserves the right to reject any video that does not meet these requirements

VIII. Judging Procedure

• 25-point scale (15–25 points, to two decimal places). Each judge awards a single overall score; there are no weighted sub-criteria and no difficulty coefficient.
• Judges score independently and blind to one another.
• Scoring: the highest and lowest scores are automatically discarded and the remainder averaged, to two decimal places (the number of judges is configured per group; where there are too few judges, the discarding of extremes is switched off for that group).
• Recusal: judges do not adjudicate students they teach directly; the Organizing Committee arranges the necessary recusals when drawing up the schedule.
• Publication of results: the full ranking and all awards are published for every group.

IX. Awards and Publication of Results

Awards are set for each group separately and determined by the Organizing Committee on a proportional basis (Online Qualifying Round certificates and On-site Grand Final certificates are determined separately). Results and awards are published together.

Special awards: the Whitelist Nomination Award (see Section III) and the Outstanding Teacher Award (for the teachers who directly taught the first, second and third prize winners).

X. Frequently Asked Questions

• How do I obtain the Whitelist certificate? You must advance to the On-site Grand Final and place within the award quota; see Section III. Certificate issuance (2026–2027) follows the schedule of the partner competition actually listed on the 2026 Whitelist
• Are certificates issued for both rounds? Yes. The online round awards Qualifying Round certificates, and the on-site round awards Grand Final certificates (plus the Whitelist certificate, within the quota). All carry personalized written comments from the judges
• Can amateur players take part? Yes. The Open Division is divided into fine-grained age bands, the repertoire is free and there are no set pieces. The "Yang Wentao Cup" Collaborative Arts Division centres on accompaniment, ensemble and massed-ensemble playing, which suits amateur competitors equally well
• Which groups can students of conservatory-affiliated secondary schools enter? All except the Open Division — the Professional Division (Classical / Popular / Digital Accordion / Chamber Music / World Music), the Orchestra Division and the "Yang Wentao Cup" Collaborative Arts Division are all open to them, and they may enter several. The Open Division is reserved for amateur competitors, which is why it is excluded
• Is the Orchestra Division eligible for the Whitelist certificate? No
• Can a digital accordion be entered in the Standard Bass or Free Bass groups? No. Digital accordion solo entries belong in the Digital Accordion groups; digital accordions may be used in chamber music and orchestra groups
• Where do I get the scores of the Yang Wentao Cup set pieces?
